Training

Being a children’s social worker is a challenging and fulfilling career that offers real job satisfaction. No two days are ever the same and you learn to expect the unexpected.

It can also lead you in a variety of career directions, as you’ll be trained in all aspects of social care from mental health to child protection. Within children’s services alone there is plenty of variety on offer: from working in assessment through to family safeguarding, or working with looked-after children.

Peterborough is an ideal place to start your social work career. As one of the UK’s smaller cities, it has a simpler local government structure, but it faces the same social issues as much bigger urban environments. It therefore has a real need for excellent social workers in its children’s service.

Peterborough is also one of four local authorities implementing the innovative Family Safeguarding model, first launched in Hertfordshire, with Peterborough now receiving a £2.8 million investment from the DfE.

The model brings together a blend of children’s social workers and adult professionals to provide a more holistic and efficient method of care, which gives social workers more control. For more information about the project and its outcomes so far, click here to read the government’s report.

If you’re starting out as a social worker, we’ll give you the support and training you will need to make a real difference to children and families across the city, with a strong assessed and supported year in employment (AYSE) programme.
