Peterborough’s children’s services are rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted

In their latest inspection, Ofsted rated Peterborough’s children’s social care services as ‘Good’.

Peterborough was rated ‘Good’ in each of the four categories, which included:

  • The impact of leaders on social work practice with children and families
  • The experiences and progress of children who need help and protection
  • The experiences and progress of children in care and care leavers
  • Overall effectiveness

The inspector said: “Services for children in Peterborough are good and have improved significantly since the last inspection in 2015. Children’s lived experiences are at the centre of practice and, as a result, they benefit from good, timely decision-making. The participation of, and direct work with, children and families are key strengths.”

Ofsted commended the effective and stable leadership of the team for having a full understanding of the services’ strengths and weaknesses and for driving large improvements. The report also praised the corporate decision-making which prioritised vulnerable children and investment into services, including a virtual school and a psychology service.

The report went on to applaud the “seamless service model” provided by the charity TACT, which took on the running of the city’s fostering and adoption services in 2016. This new and innovative approach in the first of its kind in the country.

Wendi Ogle-Welbourn, executive director for people and communities at the city council, said: “Over the last three years there have been rapid changes and sustained improvements made within the department and we are pleased these have been recognised by Ofsted inspectors.”
